Crispy Sage Tofu
Portions: 10-15 pieces
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
This golden tofu gets a fragrant upgrade with crispy sage leaves that shatter delicately with each bite. The tofu’s tender interior contrasts its crunchy exterior, while the sage adds an earthy, almost nutty aroma that elevates the dish.
Ingredients:
one 15 oz. package of firm tofu
1 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 handful fresh sage minced
1/2 tsp crushed or ground fennel seeds
1/2 tsp rosemary fresh minced or ground
2/3 cup cornstarch
2/3 cup plant-based milk
1-2 cups oil for shallow frying
Instructions:
For firmer tofu, wrap it in a paper towel and place between two plates. Set something heavy on top for at least 30 minutes.
Pat dry to remove excess moisture, then cut the tofu into cubes.
In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs with nutmeg, garlic powder, and crushed or ground fennel seeds. Add the minced sage and rosemary, and mix well.
Prepare a breading station with three shallow dishes: cornstarch in one, milk in the second, and the breadcrumb mixture in the third.
Coat each tofu cube in cornstarch, then dip in milk, and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture.
Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot enough to sizzle. Place the breaded tofu in the skillet without crowding.
Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Serve warm or cool, and enjoy!
