Ingredients
Filling
5 cups frozen berries
2 tsp lemon juice
⅓ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
⅓ cup pure maple syrup
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 ½ tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground allspice
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
Topping
⅓ cup packed light or dark brown sugar
1 cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats
½ cup flour or your choice of gluten-free option
½ tsp ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp salt
⅛ cup unsalted butter, melted
2 tbsp sliced or slivered almonds (optional)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
In a large bowl, stir together all of the filling ingredients until the apples are evenly coated. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared dish.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, oats, and flour, breaking up any clumps of sugar. Whisk in the cinnamon and salt, then stir in the melted butter until combined.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Finish with a few slivered or sliced almonds, if desired.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly, the apples are tender, and the topping is golden brown. If the topping begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil halfway through baking.
Allow the crisp to cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Serve warm, with vanilla ice cream or yogurt if desired.
