Seasonal Shifts: Kidney-Friendly Eating for the Fall Equinox

I have learned that kidney disease is more common than people think, especially for those of us within the Indigenous community. The good news is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help us protect our kidneys, including eating well.

Autumn is one of my favourite times of year, with the beautiful leaves turning to display their colorful glory and we come together for that one last push to get the harvest in before time slows down.

For me, using the bounty of the fall to make meals with my partner brings a special sense of joy. Sharing our home and kitchen with others, he often takes the lead in cooking while I do the baking the night before, BUT the very best times are when we’re both in the kitchen, sharing the making of a meal.

Lately, we’ve been taking inspiration from the Kidney Wellness Hub and their Come Cook with Us series. We enjoy how easy and adaptable not only the recipes are, but also the kitchen tool suggestions, all of which help make healthy meal preparation much easier.

I invite you to join the live session coming up October 29th, 6pm-7pm, with Mikw'achi7m (Marissa) Nahanee from Squamish and Nisga'a Nations, a kidney patient, as she shares her family recipes and tips for eating well on those low energy days. For the times you are not able to join us live, there are many on-demand videos and recipes available.

We would love to hear from you about how you celebrate your fall equinox, how these recipes turned out or if you have any future suggestions you have for upcoming cooking sessions. I love to experiment – the joy of cooking for me is in the discovery.

Everyone is welcome to explore all the resources available on the Kidney Wellness Hub to help you protect your kidney health. If you would like a personal tour of the Kidney Wellness Hub, or if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and say hello.
