The Benefits of Assisted
Therapy Dogs

With Gerry Redmond and Bailey (15 Minutes)
Gerry Redmond, a Volunteer with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program, discusses the benefits of Assisted Pet Therapy.

Ah, the unconditional love of a pet. But they do more than just show you love and are loyal companions. Research has shown that pets can reduce stress, anxiety and depression and encourage exercise and even help your cardiovascular health.

Meet Bailey, a St. John Ambulance therapy dog (visiting dog) and his owner, Gerry, who will share some heartfelt stories about how Bailey has helped people throughout the years in the Power of Pets video. Plus learn more about animal therapy programs and the many benefits for everyone involved - human and animal alike.

  • Gerry has been a Unit Facilitator volunteer with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program together with her dog, Bailey, a Japanese Chin/Shih Tzu, since 2011. The Therapy Dog Program sends handlers and their dogs to visit the elderly, the shut-in and the ill in care homes, assisted living facilities, mental health facilities, drug and addiction centres, hospices and hospitals to bring joy and companionship. Bailey, who turns 15 this September, has earned his Bronze, Silver and Gold Medallions for his volunteer hours with the St. John Ambulance, bringing “moments of joy” to those he visits.

Gerry and Bailey became partners when, as an 8-week-old puppy, he left his 4 siblings and crawled into Gerry’s lap and went to sleep! It was and still is, a match made in heaven. His favourite toy is a Skunk but his reason for being is still to give love (and to get treats!) to his friends. He is the epitome of a “companion dog” and is still going strong!!

We are delighted to have Gerry and Bailey share the benefits of animal therapy with us.
